Equivalence of the foreign title of doctor

Equivalence refers to the official recognition of doctoral degrees awarded outside the Spanish higher education system as equivalent to a PhD obtained from the UB

The procedure for establishing the equivalence of a foreign doctoral degree is carried out through the Doctoral School. The following specific regulations apply.

Requesting recognition of equivalence

1. Submit a formal request

You will need the following supporting documentation:

  • Request form.
  • DNI, NIE, passport or EU identity document.
  • Doctoral degree certificate, legalized where necessary and accompanied by an official translation in Spanish or Catalan.
  • Curriculum vitae, in Catalan, Spanish or English.
  • Proof of payment of the fee for study of equivalence (€218.15)

To obtain the form and the payment slip for the corresponding fee, you should contact the Doctoral School (i.salgadollopis@ub.edu) and arrange an appointment at one of the UB's Registry Support Offices.

The Registry staff will make a copy of your documentation and return the original copies.

2. Study of equivalence of a foreign doctoral degree and resolution by the Rector of the UB

The Doctoral School reviews the submitted documents. If any requirement is not met or documents are missing, you will be asked to submit all the necessary documents by a specific deadline. If there are reasonable doubts about the authenticity, validity or content of the documents provided, the Doctorate School may proceed to verify the data and contact the issuing authority.

Once the completed request and all of the documentation has been submitted, the Doctoral School will verify that the academic level of the foreign qualification corresponds to that of a doctoral degree issued in Spain.

The Director of the Doctoral School will then contact the Rector, recommending that your request should be accepted or rejected.

When necessary, the Director of the Doctoral School may request a report from the Equivalence Committee.

Finally, the Rector will issue a resolution accepting or rejecting the request.

The Doctoral School will notify you of the Rector's decision.

If your request is accepted, you will be issued the corresponding accreditation.

3. Issue of accreditation of equivalence

You will be notified when the certificate accrediting the equivalence of your doctoral degree has been issued so that you can collect it.

Accreditation takes effect from the date on which the certificate is awarded.

IMPORTANT

If you submitted your request before 17 July 2023, remember that you must pay the fee for the issue of the corresponding accreditation, if you have not done so already. Contact the Doctoral School to arrange payment.
