Supervision and tutorial support
Research guidance and rewiew
The role of the thesis supervisor is essential to the development of your thesis. They help you complete it and guide you through your research project.
The tutor is responsible for ensuring the appropriateness of your training and research activities and also ensures your interaction with the doctoral program's academic committee.
You can find information about this in these two documents:
- Guide to good practices in the supervision and mentoring of doctoral theses
- Code of Good Practices of the Doctoral School of the University of Barcelona
The academic committee of the doctoral program, provided there are justified reasons and following a request from the doctoral student or director, may modify the appointment of the supervisors.
You can request a change of supervisor, with due justification, from the academic committee of the doctoral program, but this must be done before the end of the maximum duration of your studies (prior to the extension period).
The responsibilities and rights of your thesis supervisor are outlined in the commitment document they have formalized with their tutor and the doctoral program coordinator. They are also outlined in the Regulations governing the Doctorate at the UB and the Internal Regulations of the UB Doctoral School.
Teaching and research staff with proven research experience may direct and/or co-direct a doctoral thesis.
Accredited research experience is defined as having at least one period of research activity in accordance with Royal Decree 1086/1989, of August 28 , on university professor remuneration, or, if this cannot be proven, having comparable research merits. Comparable research merits are defined as those required to obtain a research period according to the area of knowledge.
Teaching and research staff without proven research experience may supervise doctoral theses provided they are co-supervised by a supervisor who does have proven research experience.
The doctoral program has a list of members who are part of it and who can be thesis supervisors.
The Academic Committee of the program is responsible for assigning your supervisor(s) and tutor and, therefore, will ensure that they meet the established requirements.
The program's Academic Committee may assign you a maximum of three thesis supervisors, provided they do not belong to the same departments, organizations, centers, institutions, or entities with R+D+I activity, whether public or private, state-owned or foreign.
Retired professors will not be able to supervise doctoral theses.
If you are working on a thesis and your supervisor retires, he or she may continue to supervise you, but always under a co-supervision arrangement with another supervisor.
