  • Exit from the Convent of El Carme

    • 1 September 1837: After the exile to Cervera, the Literary University of Barcelona was provisionally restored and established in the former Convent of El Carme.
    • 5 April 1853: A vault collapsed in the Convent of El Carme, causing the death of one student and injuring five others.
    • 24 august 1859: The new university project was officially awarded to the architect Elias Rogent i Amat.
    • 30 june 1860: The technical report for the new university, to be located at the Convent of El Carme, was drafted.

  • Processing of the project

    • 28 December 1860: The Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando imposed modifications to the project for the new university and requested a new location.
    • 16 June 1861: New project for the university on its current site.
    • 24 January 1862: Official approval of the new project.

  • The First Steps of the Historic Building

    • 22 October 1863: Laying of the foundation stone of the new Literary University of Barcelona.
    • 18 September 1867: Completion of the roof structures.
    • 14 July 1870: Start of the construction works of the Paranimf (Great Hall).
    • 24 September 1871: King Amadeo I inaugurates the General Exhibition of the Four Catalan Provinces in the building.

  • Completion and Recognitions

    • 18 June 1881: The bells of the Clock Tower, built by Miquel Forcada of Vic, begin to ring.
    • 7 March 1889: The governing board of the works is dissolved, and Elies Rogent is dismissed as the University’s architect, as the construction is officially considered complete.
    • 19 June 1893: Reception and installation of the perimeter gate.
    • 26 February 1970: Declared a national historic-artistic monument.
    • 1 October 2022: 150th anniversary of the Historic Building.

  • Beginning of Teaching Activities

    • 11 December 1871: Informal start of classes.
    • 1 October 1872: First official opening ceremony of the academic year in the Saló de Doctors (now the Aula Magna).
    • 6 December 1875: Placement of the sculptures by Agapit and Venanci Vallmitjana in the vestibule niches.
    • 26 July 1877: Installation of the clock in the Letters Tower (Torre de Lletres).
