Objectives and competences

Objectives

The primary objective of the master's degree in Advanced Mathematics is to provide specialized, high-quality education in different areas of knowledge in mathematics and its applications. The master's degree program has also been designed to provide students with the tools they will need to perform high-level scientific or professional tasks, such as expertise in and the application of advanced computing methods, the capacity to work in multidisciplinary environments and the capacity to transmit advanced mathematical knowledge, among others.

Competences

Participants in the program will acquire a set of general skills, including the ability to apply the knowledge and abilities gained throughout the course, effective time and resource management, utilization of new technologies for accessing specialized bibliographic databases, gathering information essential for problem-solving and synthesis, and the capacity to collaborate efficiently within a team.

The specific skills that participants will acquire include the ability to understand the concepts and rigorous proofs of fundamental theorems of both general and specific areas of mathematics, the capacity to apply the results and techniques learned to solve complex problems in academic or professional contexts, the capacity to choose and use the most suitable computer tools to approach math-related problems, and the capacity to design, develop and implement efficient computer programs to approach problems related to mathematics.

Access and admission

Applicant profile and access requirements

Recommended applicant profile

Applicants should also have an interest in pursuing a career in mathematical research, either at the university or in an affiliated research center, or a career in the private sector requiring a high training in mathematics (finance, biomedicine, information and communication technologies, etc.).

Access requirements and conditions

General requirements
In accordance with Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, students wishing to be admitted to a university master's degree must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • Official Spanish university degree.

  • A degree issued by a higher education institution within the European Higher Education Area framework that authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue.

  • A qualification issued by an institution outside the framework of the European Higher Education Area. In this case, applicants must request homologation of the degree to its equivalent official Spanish university qualification or obtain express approval from the University of Barcelona, which will conduct a study of equivalence to ensure that the degree is of a comparable level to an official Spanish university qualification and that it grants access to university master's degree study in the country of issue. Admission shall not, in any case, imply that prior qualifications have been recognized as equivalent to a Spanish master's degree and does not confer recognition for any purposes other than that of admission to the master's degree course.

Specific requirements
This course is open to all those in possession of a bachelor's degree in mathematics or an equivalent official degree qualification.
Applicants with a degree in physics, engineering, economics or other similar disciplines, or an officially recognized equivalent degree, granted by an EHEA university, or students with a bachelor's degree in mathematics or any of the other abovementioned disciplines, or with an equivalent degree, granted by a university not belonging to the EHEA may be admitted with approval from the Coordination Committee. The committee will evaluate the students' potential to assimilate the content of the master's program based on their previous studies and will decide, if deemed necessary, to require these students to take bridging courses up to a maximum of 30 credits within the subjects offered in the bachelor's degree in Mathematics as taught by the UB's Faculty of Mathematics.

Required documentation

  • Pre-enrolment application
  • Photocopy of degree certificate or equivalent qualification. In case of admission, foreign degrees that require so should be translated and authenticated through diplomatic channels before completing the enrolment.
  • Other specific documentation related to the selection criteria
    1. A copy of your Transcript of Records in either Catalan, English, or Spanish.
    2. Curriculum vitae
    3. A motivation letter (statement of purpose) is also recommended.

Selection criteria

The Master's Coordinating Committee will assess students based on:
- Academic excellence. A strong academic background in mathematics, typically evidenced by a high undergraduate score. This ensures that candidates have a solid foundation in mathematical principles and the capability to succeed in an advanced mathematics program.
- Research potential. Demonstrated research experience or the potential to engage in advanced mathematical research is a valuable criterion. This could include a relevant undergraduate thesis, participation in mathematical competitions, or other experiences showcasing the candidate's ability to contribute to the field.
