The University of Barcelona has been the first university in Spain to receive a delegation of fifteen US universities that are members of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), an organization that brings together US universities with a significant presence of students of Hispanic origin. After the session at the UB on 22 April, the US delegation will continue with a tour of several universities, organized by the Spanish Service for the Internationalization of Education (SEPIE), HACU and the US Embassy in Spain.

The next destination for the representatives of the US universities will be Madrid. They will attend a session in which Diana Morant, Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, will participate. They will continue with visits to the University of Seville and the University of Castilla-La Mancha, in the city of Toledo.

The welcome session at the UB consisted on an institutional reception chaired by the rector, Joan Guàrdia, and with the presence of the US consul, Katie Stana; the vicepresident of HACU Programs, Oralia de los Reyes; the territorial delegate of ICEX in Catalonia, José Ignacio Pradas, and Pia Moret, director of the Office of the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia. This was followed by a working session on sustainability and universities, in which the UB’s Vice-Rector for Sustainability and Climate Action, Teresa Sauras, made her speech.

Finally, the representatives of the fifteen American universities have had the opportunity to establish contacts with various Catalan universities present at the conference in a networking session.

HACU brings together more than 600 universities and colleges committed to the higher education of the Hispanic community. Members are US colleges and universities classified as Hispanic Serving Institutions, which are those where at least 25% of the students are of Hispanic origin.
