Today, the Boardroom of the University of Barcelona held the presentation of the new UB Chair on Prevention and Oral Health, with the support from Curaden AG. With this, the University and the company strengthen their collaboration, which started in 2019.

The aim of the chair is to promote the education on oral hygiene habits for the future professionals of dentistry, as well as to encourage them in the field of prevention and oral health and strengthen the innovation in this area.

This agreement will lead to ITOP (Individually Trained Oral Prophylaxis) training workshops for the UB students of Dentistry, as well as disseminating activities and further training for the professionals in charge of the oral health. It will also create research lines of quality on oral health. ITOP is a prevention program by Curaden, which focuses on the controlling of the main cause of the most common oral health diseases: biofilm.

The rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia, was satisfied with the solidification of this agreement: “This chair is another example of the strength resulting from the collaboration between university and company, in this case the field of oral hygiene. Together with Curaden, we will promote the good practice on prevention and oral health among our students”.

The director of the chair, Isabel Martínez Lizán, lecturer from the Department of Odonto-Stomatology at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB, states that “the link between oral and systemic diseases requires for the future dentists to be able to empower and motivate the patient and citizens regarding the healthy behaviours and habits that result in a good health and quality of life. Therefore, it is essential to follow a safe, efficient and acceptable practice of the individual oral hygiene habits”. The UB expert added that “this agreement is a qualitative step towards promoting prevention and oral health among our students as well as providing the researchers on prevention and oral health of our University with tools and resources”.

Then, Ana Stevanovic, head of Professional Education of Curaden AG, noted that for Curaden, the collaboration with Universities is one of the most important strategic imperatives for the future. Stevanovic explained that “what will truly revolutionise our world to become healthier and happier will be the better education of future dental professionals, especially when it comes to the best practical knowledge in individual prevention. More than thirty-five Universities worldwide have already recognized this need and implemented iTOP, and we are happy to have University of Barcelona among them”.

Josep Maria Ustrell, vicedean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and German Pareja, president of the Association of Dentists and Stomatologists of Catalonia, have attended the presentation.
