Agapit Vallmitjana, together with his brother Venanci, are the precursors of the modernization of the Catalan sculpture of the second half of the 19th century. This sculpture of Isabel II is a sketch of what would later become the final sculpture of Isabel II with the prince of Astrurias, and becomes an example of how an ordered piece made with free creativity can differ: while the definite piece of Isabel II portrait, in marble, is linked to the conventionalism of the past, this sketch in bronze is full of modern traits.

There are currently two related sculptures in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia (MNAC). The definite work belongs to the Prado Museum and is in the repository in Palau de Pedralbes.

Giravolt. Enjoy the cultural heritage in 3D

The 3D digitation of this piece results from the collaboration of the University of Barcelona with the Department of Culture after the celebration, in 2019 of the Vallmitjana Year. It is framed within the Giravolt program, a pioneering project in Catalonia on the digitalization of heritage, which offers citizens an immersive and interactive experience to meet and access the cultural heritage of the country.
