The 37th annual conference of the Society of Quality Assurance (SQA) in the United States has awarded the prize to the top poster to the work carried out by the team of the Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology Platform (UTOX) of the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), the Quality Assurance Unity (QAU-GLP-PCB) and the Research Quality Service of the UB (SQR-UB).

The poster, titled Remote GLP Study Inspections: From an Integration Tool for People with Physical Disability towards an Opportunity for COVID-19 Pandemic Disruption, was submitted by Carme Navarro, from the Research Quality Service of the Agency for Policy and Quality of the University of Barcelona (APQ-UB). This international award honours the contribution of the awarded project to introduce tools that favour the integration of people with reduced mobility and facilitate inspections on quality in a non-face-to-face format in case of a pandemic or other contingencies.

The Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology Platform (UTOX) at PCB conducts regulatory preclinical safety studies under rules of good laboratory practices (GLP), which enables the carrying out of developmental programs of new chemical and biological entities, healthcare products and personal hygiene products, cosmetics, food additives, chemical products and nanomaterials.

Since 2008, the group led by Carme Navarro has unfolded the UTOX Quality Guarantee Program to obtain and keep the certificate of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and therefore offer and carry out safety services in the health field. With a reduced mobility perspective and the existing barriers in some areas, the team formed by Carme Navarro, Rosa M. Vilanova, M. José Garcia and Javier González-Linares, tackled the option of conducting the GLP inspections of critical phases of studies in a non-face-to-face format using the help of videoconference applications. This innovation, which eased the work during the pandemic, brings great advantages without reducing the quality of the carried-out inspections.

“At UTOX, we want to share with the UB and PCB community our satisfaction and thankfulness to the team for obtaining this deserved international award”, notes Àngel Menargues, director of the platform.
