Recovering the memory of the pacifist movement in Catalonia

The sessions will be opened by the rector's delegate for International Networks and Mobility, Bibiana Crespo, and the Minister of Justice, Rights and Memory of the Catalan Government, Gemma Ubasart. The activity is part of two research projects led by UB researchers Eva Figueras, from the Faculty of Fine Arts, and Glòria Bordons, from the Faculty of Education. The aim of both projects is for the artistic creation to interpret current events and to contribute to the generation of critical thinking and collective memory processes. In the case of the Castellterçol event, the aim is for citizens to participate in the initiative to value and recover the memory of the peace movement. 

The University is working on an explanation of this session in a forthcoming publication on the Castellterçol camps and the peace movement in Catalonia. This piece will include texts by several researchers from the UB and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, with a chapter dedicated to visual poetry made by children in Castellterçol, in an initiative led by the Faculty of Education and a collection of photographs of the performance by the researchers of the UB and the Pompeu Fabra University. Moreover, the students of the bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, led by Marcel·lí Antúnez, have worked on the making of materials for the performance Rua-acción artística Veraplau Bonet, which will march around the streets of Castellterçol and will include the participation of groups and associations of the town. 

The session is co-organized by the UB, the International Catalan Institute for Peace, the Democratic Memorial, the Catalan Government, and the town council of Castellterçol. The two UB research projects in which the session is framed are “Les trobades de no violencia a Castellterçol i el moviment pacifista a Catalunya. Acció-Reflexió entre l’art i la public history”, funded by the International Catalan Institute for Peace, and “Poéticas liminales en el mundo contemporáneo: creación, formación y compromiso social”, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. The former’s objectives are updating the memory of the peace movement in Catalonia; recovering the memory of the peace movement and the conscientious objection from a perspective of the region of Moianès and raising awareness and involving citizens in the reconstruction of this memory using the local collaborative artistic works and the contribution of the academic experience. The other research project aims to promote the co-creation as a transforming agent of the current social reality; to develop the critical thought and raise awareness to vulnerable sectors of society through artistic creation; to empower groups with fewer opportunities; and to promote an inclusive art with values that enable facing current challenges such as awareness on ecology, hunger, gender violence and peace.    

Des de la Universitat, l’explicació de la jornada s’inclourà en una obra —que es publicarà properament— sobre els campaments de Castellterçol i el moviment pacifista a Catalunya. Hi haurà textos de diversos investigadors de la UB i de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, així com un capítol dedicat als poemes visuals escrits per infants de Castellterçol en una iniciativa liderada per la Facultat d’Educació, i un recull fotogràfic de la rua Verapau Bolet a càrrec d’investigadors de la UB i la Universitat Pompeu Fabra. D’altra banda, estudiants del grau en Belles Arts, dirigits per Marcel·lí Antúnez, han col·laborat en la confecció del material d’aquesta acció artística, que recorrerà els carrers de Castellterçol i en la qual participaran diversos col·lectius i associacions de la població.

La jornada està coorganitzada per la UB, l’Institut Català Internacional per la Pau, el Memorial Democràtic, la Generalitat de Catalunya i l’Ajuntament de Castellterçol. Els dos projectes de recerca de la UB en què s’emmarca la jornada són «Les trobades de no-violència a Castellterçol i el moviment pacifista a Catalunya.  », finançat per l’Institut Català Internacional per la Pau, i «Poéticas liminales en el mundo contemporáneo: creación, formación y compromiso social», finançat pel Ministeri d’Economia i Competitivitat. En el primer cas, es persegueixen objectius com ara actualitzar la memòria del moviment pacifista a Catalunya; recuperar la memòria del moviment pacifista i l’objecció de consciència des de la perspectiva de la comarca del Moianès, i sensibilitzar i implicar la ciutadania en la reconstrucció d’aquesta memòria a partir del treball artístic col·laboratiu local i l’aportació d’expertesa acadèmica. El segon projecte de recerca vol fomentar la cocreació com a agent transformador de la realitat social actual; desenvolupar el pensament crític; donar visibilitat a sectors vulnerables de la societat a través de la creació artística; empoderar col·lectius amb menys oportunitats, i potenciar un art inclusiu amb valors que permetin afrontar reptes actuals, com ara la consciència de l’ecologia, la fam, la violència masclista o la pau.
