Today, Thursday 7 November, the Paranimph Gallery of the Historic Building held the awards ceremony for the athletes of the 2022-2023 academic year of the University of Barcelona. Among the participants were the Rector, Joan Guàrdia, the Vice-rector for Students and Participation, Marta Ferrer, and the student of the Faculty of Economics and Business Miquel Domènech on behalf of the athletes.
In this ceremony, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences, Jordi Camarasa, has received a plaque in honour of the faculty with the highest participation in the University Leagues. The sponsoring company Yamaha Motor Europe NV has also received a plaque and, at the end of the event, has made a donation of two electric bicycles for the displacement of UB Sports staff. Then, the 90 top athletes of the Catalan University Championships — both in individual sports and in UB Teams — have been given a diploma.
In the Catalan University Championships, 311 UB athletes participated (160 girls and 151 boys) and in the Spanish University Championships, 101 (75 girls and 26 boys). They won a total of 100 medals: 75 in Catalonia (26 gold, 24 silver and 25 bronze) and 25 in the Spanish championships (11 gold, 6 silver and 8 bronze), in the following sports disciplines: athletics, swimming, orienteering, climbing, chess, equestrian, judo, taekwondo, karate, paddle tennis, tennis, table tennis and basketball (women's and men's). In addition, the women's football team participated in the European University Championship, which took place in Tirana (Albania) in July, and obtained 7th place in the continental championship.
An essential part of these achievements is the sponsorship of the Institute for Lifelong Learning (IL3) with regard to the UB National Teams and the program of aid to athletes, which includes a follow-up of both sporting and academic results.
The director of INEFC Barcelona, Alfredo Irurtia, received the trophy for being the center or faculty of the UB that contributed more students and medalists to the UB Selections. In addition, plaques have been awarded to the coaches who finish their stage after a successful career with the UB teams: Pol Garcia Acedo (handball), Ciro Esparré (volleyball), Claudia Autonell (football), and Aitor Piedra and Adrià Cisneros (basketball).
Afterwards, a plaque has been given to the two top tutors of the programme Tutoresport UB for their dedication to the programme over the years: the head of studies of the bachelor’s degree in Nursing of the Faculty of Nursing, Amparo del Pino, and the lecturer of the Department of Biology, Health and Environment of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences Joan Simon.
At the end, two plaques have been given to the top individual athletes of the UNIRUN race: Marta Sabaté, student at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Víctor Ortiz, student at the Faculty of Psychology. Another plaque has been given to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Antoni Trilla, a cup in honour of the faculty with most athletes in the UNIRUN’23.
To close the ceremony, the student of the master’s degree in Sport Business Management of the Faculty of Economics and Business Miquel Domènech said some words on behalf of the athlete students of the UB.
