Carme Junyent, leading figure in the study of linguistics, passes away

Carme Junyent, professor at the Faculty of Philology and Communication of the University of Barcelona, author of an extensive research in the field of endangered languages, linguistic anthropology and the languages of immigration in Catalonia, has died. The UB is already working on the tribute to the researcher, who was remembered by the rector, Joan Guàrdia, as a “tireless person, with thousands of projects on her head”, and who, moreover, became a “model of lucidity at the end”.

Carme Junyent, professor at the Faculty of Philology and Communication of the University of Barcelona, author of an extensive research in the field of endangered languages, linguistic anthropology and the languages of immigration in Catalonia, has died. The UB is already working on the tribute to the researcher, who was remembered by the rector, Joan Guàrdia, as a “tireless person, with thousands of projects on her head”, and who, moreover, became a “model of lucidity at the end”.

She was awarded the Saint George’s Cross given by the Catalan Government for her commitment to the Catalan language, and was the driver of the Study Group for Endangered Languages (GELA) and the Group of Linguists for Diversity (GLiDi). Carme Junyent developed a long career of scientific dissemination in the area of endangered languages, substitution processes and the values of linguistic diversity, especially in the area of education. She was also part of the expert committee consulted for the writing of the Universal Declaration of Linguistic Rights (1996), and was member of the International Scientific Committee of Linguamón – Casa de les Llengües. She also directed the inventory of languages spoken in Catalonia, which now numbers over 300, and was the curator of the exhibitions “Languages in Catalonia” and “The languages of the Catalans”. She was the winner of the 8th Awards of the Doctorsʼ Senate and Board of Trustees of the UB to the top scientific and humanistic dissemination activities.
