Chocolate biologist spreading science this Easter
This year, around fifty patisseries are offering the mona de ciència (science Easter cake), an Easter chocolate figure to disseminate science and awake vocations among children. For the second year running, the UB and the Barcelona Patisserie Guild have joined forces to carry out this project. This year, the chocolate science cake is a biologist, equipped with a butterfly net and a replica of a DNA chain.

This year, the chocolate science cake is a biologist, equipped with a butterfly net and a replica of a DNA chain.
Mones de ciència is a project by La UB Divulga, which is dedicated to a new scientific discipline every year: last year the figure was a geologist and this year it is a biologist. “She carries a butterfly net, which is the main tool for collecting flora and fauna in order to study the biodiversity of our planet”, says Pau Fortuño, a researcher of the Freshwater Ecology, Hydrology and Management (FEHM) research group and the UB’s Biodiversity Research Institute (IRBio). “We also wanted to represent the micro part of biology with a DNA molecule, the molecule of life”, continues Raquel Rabionet, professor of genetics at the UB and member of the Institute of Biomedicine (IBUB) at the UB, the Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute (IRSJD) and the Centre for Biomedical Research Network on Rare Diseases (CIBERER).
The added value that makes the cake different from others is a QR code, which gives you access to a website with informative biology content and several online games.
“As we did last year, we wanted to make an easy cake, which can reach everyone”, says the pastry chef Adrià Ruiz, an instructor at the Guild’s Patisserie School.
