Yesterday, Thursday 23 November, the official switch-on of Christmas lights that will ornate the Historic Building until 7 January took place. This year’s installation at the University of Barcelona collaborates for the first time with the project #RavalKm0, a solidarity initiative that has been lightening the streets, shop windows and other spaces in the Raval neighbourhood for nine years.
In addition to the traditional light curtains that decorate the façade and the Christmas tree in the Stairway of Honour (Historic Building), this year we can also see garlands and decorative lights in the cloisters and the Main Vestibule, a big Christmas ball in the central garden and backlit letters in the Aribau-Gran Via garden.

The new installation of this year results from the project called #RavalKm0, and it is a series of sculptures and lights inspired by photographs taken to the people who live and work in the Raval neighbourhood. This project has offered training opportunities to 53 people, has enabled 32 unemployed people to get a temporary job, and has taken photographs of 450 people linked to the neighbourhood. With this collaboration, the UB aims to strengthen its ties to the community and the environment, and it shows its commitment to a fair, inclusive and equal society.

According to the responsible commitment to reduce the energy use, the UB has installed energy-saving lightbulbs. Moreover, the lights will be switched on from 6.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m., and when the Historic Building closes, only the lights people see from the outside will be on.
