The University of Barcelona climbs up to twenty positions in the prestigious QS World University Rankings, holding the 164th place worldwide among the more than 1,500 higher education institutions the ranking analyses. With this result, the UB is listed in the 11% of the top universities worldwide and it gets the 70 position in Europe. Also, it is the leading institution in Spain in three indicators: sustainability, research networks and in academic reputation.
Regarding the sustainability indicator — added to the ranking for the first time this year —, the UB gets 98.1 points out of 100 and it reaches the 23rd position worldwide. It gets this very same position in the indicator on international research networks. As for the academic reputation, the UB has climbed up to the 83 position (it was listed in the 84 and 87 positions in the last two editions).

The academic reputation indicator holds an important weigh in the final result: specifically, 30%. However, the indicators of sustainability and participation in international research networks account for 5% each. The other indicators in the ranking are employer reputation (with a weight of 15%), faculty-student ratio (10%), citations per faculty (20%), international faculty ratio (5%), international student ratio (5%) and employment outcomes (5).

Since the QS ranking began a new methodology eleven years ago — which this year has been adjusted with new indicators —, the UB has had an upward trend: it has climbed positions in six editions, it has remained the same in two and it has fallen on three occasions.

According to the QS World University Rankings 2023, the best universities in the world are, in this order, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford.
