Yesterday afternoon, the rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia, and the rector of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Javier Lafuente, presented an agreement by which both institutions are committed to collaborate to train students together. The presentation took place within the framework of a meeting with representatives of health institutions, given that the first area in which this agreement will be developed is that of health sciences; specifically, in the practical training of health specialties.
"Today, we bear witness to what is already a reality: the joint academic collaboration of the two faculties of Medicine of our universities, in areas such as hospital internships", said Guàrdia. For his part, Lafuente described the day as "a historic day" and stressed that both universities have "two hospital systems that, working together, can have a positive impact on the training of doctors and provide a better service to society".

Also, both rectors stressed that this is only a first step. "We have other shared transfer and research projects", explained Guàrdia, while Lafuente said that "this agreement starts in the field of health, but aims to be more ambitious".

Next, the dean of the UAB’s Faculty of Medicine, Salvador Navarro, stated that the need to increase the number of places in the degree in Medicine was the trigger for initiating this collaboration in practical training. He also explained that the agreement contemplates the exchange of internship places in hospitals and healthcare centers for students in the sixth year of the degree: students, in addition to having as possible internship destinations the hospitals and healthcare centers of the university where they are enrolled, will also have the option of requesting a center at the other university. Each year the two faculties will offer a certain number of places for this exchange and students who wish to apply must follow a selection process.

On the other hand, the dean of the UB’s Faculty of Medicine, Antoni Trilla, commented on the other forms of collaboration envisaged by the agreement, one of which is the organization of a summer university, with the aim of offering an innovative, original and attractive activity. Another one is the implementation of new joint elective courses, with teaching staff from both faculties. Finally, the Dean affirmed that collaboration makes the health system stronger as a whole.

At the moment, the UB has five university hospitals (Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Bellvitge University Hospital, Hospital de Sant Joan de Déu, Hospital Complex Moisès Broggi - Integral Health Consortium, and University Hospital Mútua Terrassa), and the UAB has four (University Hospital Vall d’Hebron, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, and University Hospital Parc Taulí).

After the presentation of the agreement, the meeting continued with the round table "The future of the teaching of health professions: From academia to citizenship", with the participation of the vice-rector for Teaching Policy of the UB, Conxita Amado; the rector's delegate for relations with health institutions of the UAB, Manuel Armengol; the deputy director general of Professional Planning and Development of the Department of Health of the Catalan Government, Alícia Àvila; the vice-rector of Academic Policy and Quality of the UB, Pilar Delgado; the vice-rector of Quality of the UAB, Tatiana Rovira, and the president of the Catalan Society of Family and Community Medicine, Antoni Sisó.
