The University of Barcelona and Eurecat will promote research and technological innovation in the food and health sector

The University of Barcelona, through the Torribera Food Campus, and the Technology Centre of Catalonia (Eurecat) have signed a collaboration agreement to promote research and technological innovation projects in the food and health sector. The agreement also includes the development of joint doctoral theses in this field; the generation of projects of high strategic value; participation in competitive and non-competitive calls for proposals, both national and international, and the promotion of agri-food innovation in the Catalan research and development ecosystem.

The University of Barcelona, through the Torribera Food Campus, and the Technology Centre of Catalonia (Eurecat) have signed a collaboration agreement to promote research and technological innovation projects in the food and health sector. The agreement also includes the development of joint doctoral theses in this field; the generation of projects of high strategic value; participation in competitive and non-competitive calls for proposals, both national and international, and the promotion of agri-food innovation in the Catalan research and development ecosystem.

 

In an event that took place on Friday 15 December in the Ramón y Cajal Hall of the Historic Building, the rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia, stressed that "the University of Barcelona and Eurecat are two unavoidable partners". "Eurecat is a key institution in the field of knowledge transfer to Catalonia and, therefore, this path of collaboration that we have started can bear great results”, he said.

For his part, Eurecat's Corporate and Operations CEO, Xavier López, stressed "the importance of having an instrument like this agreement". "It allows us to formalize and systematize our collaboration with a benchmark university such as the UB, in a scientific and technological field as important as food and health".

The director of the Torribera Campus, M. Carmen Vidal, said that the agreement signed opens "a broad window of opportunities to expand and improve research, transfer and innovation in a sector as important from many points of view as the agri-food sector". "It is now a challenge for all of us to get down to work and strengthen and value our synergies to expand the frontiers of current research and become an international benchmark in the field of food and health, as well as to promote the transfer of our projects to society and the productive fabric", she said.

Francesc Puiggròs, scientific director of Eurecat's Biotechnology Area, declared that "the strategic collaboration between the UB Food Campus and Eurecat will make it possible to take advantage of the breadth of research activities and their application to the business fabric to, as a whole, boost the strength of the food innovation ecosystem in our territory and amplify its impact for of society".

Also present at the signing ceremony were the vice-rector for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Transfer, Mercè Segarra, and other representatives of Eurecat.
