The UB co-organises the conference "Dismantling disinformation" as part of Media Literacy Week in Catalonia

On Monday 23 October, the Paranymph Hall of the Historic Building will host the event "Dismantling disinformation. Learn to check media literacy summit for educators", organised by the University of Barcelona, the Association of Journalists of Catalonia and the Audiovisual Council of Catalonia. The event is part of Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2023, which is being commemorated from 23 to 25 October and which this year is titled "Media and Information Literacy in Digital Spaces: A Collective Global Agenda".

On Monday 23 October, the Paranymph Hall of the Historic Building will host the event "Dismantling disinformation. Learn to check media literacy summit for educators", organised by the University of Barcelona, the Association of Journalists of Catalonia and the Audiovisual Council of Catalonia. The event is part of Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2023, which is being commemorated from 23 to 25 October and which this year is titled "Media and Information Literacy in Digital Spaces: A Collective Global Agenda".

The event will begin at 4.30 p.m. with institutional speeches by Sergi Barrera, Head of the European Parliament Office in Barcelona; Manuel Szapiro, Director of the European Commission Representation in Barcelona; Rian Harris, Minister-Counsellor of the US Embassy in Madrid; and Joan Guàrdia, Rector of the UB.

Ebonee Otoo, Vice President for Educator Engagement at the News Literacy Project, will then deliver the opening conference. The US-based organisation aims to help differentiate credible news from dubious news by reinforcing the role of free journalism as a driver of a healthy democracy.

The roundtable "The challenges of media education in Catalonia" will include the participation of Montse Jiménez, pedagogical director of the Vedruna-Prats de la Carrera school in Palafrugell; Àlex Hinojo, co-founder of the Digital Rights project and language activist; Nereida Carrillo, co-founder and president of Learn to Check and professor of Journalism at the Autonomous University of Barcelona; Nacho Guadix, head of Education and Digital Rights for Children at UNICEF Spain, and Laura Pinyol, advisor and coordinator of the Commission for Relations with Society, Children, Gender and Education in Communication of the Audiovisual Council of Catalonia.

Ebonee Otoo, Vice President for Educator Engagement at the News Literacy Project, will deliver the opening conference.

The day will be rounded off with two lectures by Roger Cuartielles of Learn to Check and Yevhen Fedchenko, director of the Mohyla School of Journalism in Kyiv and co-founder and editor-in-chief of the fact-checking website stopfake.org, as well as workshops with educational pills.
