As of today, the University of Barcelona has a new Faculty of Nursing, the only public centre in the Barcelona area that will provide training to the largest number of nurses in Catalonia. The UB Faculty of Nursing acquires the status of a faculty and, as of the next academic year, will make a decisive contribution to the visibility and social recognition of the nursing profession in Catalonia. Nursing is a sector in which 40% of staff are over 50 years of age and, therefore, there will —in the coming years— be a growing demand for new professionals to join the market.

The autonomy and independence of the new centre will offer the future nurses a way to increase their professional prestige and academic identity. At the same time, the projection and image of nursing education at the international level will be strengthened. Currently, 20% of the country's nursing staff get their bachelor’s degree at the UB, making it the university with the highest percentage of the entire Catalan university system.

The rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia, stresses the importance of this decision: "The creation of the Faculty of Nursing corrects a historical debt to the profession. The benefits will be obvious in terms of obtaining resources, improving international competitiveness and optimizing student services, among others. But above all, we are placing nursing at the level it deserves, as one of the key areas of health and care for people".

The Faculty of Nursing will offer a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, 3 university master's degrees (Advanced Nursing Clinical Practice; Leadership and Management in Nursing Services, and Applied Research Methodology in Nursing Care), and 14 master's degrees and postgraduate courses of its own, in addition to the doctoral programme in Nursing and Health (interuniversity programme with the Rovira i Virgili University, coordinated by the UB). The centre will have a volume of 2,700 students, 369 members of teaching and research staff and 150 members of administration and services staff (in some cases, shared with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences).

Students will continue their practical training at the UB's five university hospitals (Hospital Clínic, Hospital de Bellvitge, Hospital Complex Moisès Broggi, University Hospital Mútua Terrassa and Hospital Sant Joan de Déu), 11 hospitals and associated centres, seven social health centres and 51 primary care centres.

The main international rankings (Academic Ranking of World Universities and QS World University Rankings) recognise the research leadership of the University of Barcelona in the field of nursing, which will now be incorporated into the faculty, which will have nine consolidated research groups.

Teaching excellence

Each year the University of Barcelona offers 530 new places for the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, a figure that represents 37% of the places offered by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The increase of 641 places in Nursing studies for the 2022-2023 academic year is particularly significant because, for the first time, the number of public places has exceeded the number of private places that are offered. The health emergency caused by COVID-19 has further highlighted the lack of nursing staff in the Catalan health system.

According to the latest pre-enrolment data, 31.5% of all students wishing to study for a degree in nursing in Catalonia applied for admission to the UB School of Nursing. In the 2022-2023 academic year, the school has had seven teaching groups, with a total of 530 students out of the 2,825 places available to study the Bachelor's degree in Nursing in the entire Catalan university system.
