Given the drought emergency declared by the Government of Catalonia, the University of Barcelona has taken control measures to ensure the fulfilment of the restrictions the Catalan Water Agency has progressively approved. Aiming to save water up, the University of Barcelona has also launched an awareness campaign, along with the lines of the campaign of the Government of Catalonia. The vice-rector for Sustainability and Climate Action, Teresa Sauras, says “we are maximizing the measures to continue reducing water consumption” and she notes that “over the last 25 years, the University of Barcelona has carried out several actions that have allowed us to reduce the water consumption by 70.6%”.

Specifically, in 2023, the general consumption of water at the University of Barcelona was 122,813.44 m³, while in 1995 it was 471,642 m³. This has been possible thanks to the actions that cover the improvement of the facilities, as well as water conservation measures on the distribution network and consumption practices. During recent years, a water-consumption monitoring in the buildings has been carried out progressively. This monitoring is carried out through a computer program that sets an alarm when the use of water is not maintained under a fixed limit at night. This is a way of getting a quick detection and resolution of water leaks and waste. Other measures have been taken, such as the implementation of temporary water taps in several buildings.

Raising awareness among the university community

Now, a new awareness campaign for the university community starts. It will share specific advice, such as the importance of informing about water leaks, or the importance of not using the toilet as a bin. “These messages aim to raise awareness on the fact that water is a limited resource and that we must apply good practices on responsible use in any activity we carry out in these facilities”, says Teresa Sauras.
