The University of Barcelona and AdSalutem, the Barcelona Sleep Medicine Institute, today presented the UB-AdSalutem Chair on Sleep and its Disorders in the Paranymph of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona. The collaboration between the two institutions will promote research, training, teaching and dissemination activities in this medical discipline, with the aim of promoting healthy sleep and improving the well-being and quality of life of patients with sleep disorders.

The activities promoted by the chair are related to the development of theoretical and practical clinical training courses for university students and health professionals, stays in sleep units, the promotion of public-private research in this field, the promotion of scientific publications on sleep and the creation of a national research award, among other actions.

The collaboration between the two institutions will promote research, training, teaching and dissemination activities in this medical discipline, with the aim of promoting healthy sleep and improving the well-being and quality of life of patients with sleep disorders.

The professor of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB and director of the Chair, Alejandro Iranzo, welcomed the path that is opening up in this speciality thanks to the Chair: Dreams and their disorders. Throughout his presentation, he explained how “the lack of quality sleep affects more and more people and is a cause of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases”. He also highlighted the multidisciplinary nature of these studies, “which bring together specialists in neurology, pulmonology, otorhinolaryngology, psychiatry and psychology, among others”. Finally, he advocated “promoting sleep medicine as a basic ingredient for building healthy lives”.

The rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia, expressed his satisfaction with the collaboration between the UB and AdSalutem, as well as the research excellence of Iranzo, “one of the world authorities in the study of sleep disorders. We are in the hands of the best person to take this project forward,” he remarked. He highlighted the successful model of public-private collaboration that the UB Chairs represent: “we are learning to tune in, to draw spaces where things can happen”.

On behalf of AdSalutem, an institution specialising in the research, dissemination and diagnosis of sleep disorders, Antoni Esteve stated that “the launch of this chair responded to a private initiative with the public vocation of making the fruits of research available to society. And, moreover, to do so in a very open and collaborative way”.

Among the attendants was also the dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Antoni Trilla, who expressed the desire that this chair “surpasses the expectations created, which are already very high”, and the general director of the Hospital Clinic, Josep Maria Campistol, who highlighted “the work carried out by the Hospital Clinic over the last twenty years on sleep disorders, which has now catalysed the creation of this chair”.
