On Thursday 18 April, at 12.00, in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Geography and History of the University of Barcelona, will take place the institutional act of celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of this Faculty. The event will be attended by the Rector, Joan Guàrdia, the Catalan Minister for Research and Universities, Joaquim Nadal, and the Dean of the Faculty, Ricardo Piqueras. The aim is to highlight the importance of half a century of dedication to knowledge and research in social and cultural anthropology, archaeology, geography and global change, history and art history. The ceremony can be followed online on UBtv.
The event will be attended by authorities and representatives of the university community, such as Rosa Vergés, director and recent winner of a Gaudí Prize, a graduate of the first graduating classes of Art History, and Higinio Alcocer, a former member of the technical, management, sdministration and services staff (PTGAS).

The Emeritus Professor Jordi Cassasas will give the master lecture “La Facultat de Geografia i Història, 50 anys d’història”, in which he will give a brief review of the circumstances that led to its creation, its characteristics and the evolution it has undergone during this half-century of existence, with a special focus on the main protagonists.

An audiovisual editing produced by the Film-History Research Centre will also be screened, which includes a selection of news and events published in the NO-DO newsreel of 1974, the year of the inauguration of the Faculty, to contextualize the period. The material contains images such as statements by the president of the government, Carlos Arias Navarro, when he visited Barcelona, the league Barça won and the writer Ramon J. Sender’s visit to the city.

Throughout the ceremony, the UB Choir will entertain the audience with the performance of various pieces from its repertoire. Finally, the event will close with speeches by Ricardo Piqueras, Joaquim Nadal and Joan Guàrdia.

This year, the Faculty of Geography and History is commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of its creation. During the first quarter of the year, the lecture series “La Facultat avui: Què diu i aporta a la societat actual?” (The Faculty today: What does it say and contribute to today's society?) was held, with renowned speakers addressing various topics relevant to contemporary society, such as the new cultures of water and territory, the way history is narrated today, the relationship between past and memory, climate change and degrowth, or migrations and social inequalities.

The CRAI is also planning an exhibition of all the magazines published by the faculty in this half-century, which will be in virtual format, and a display in the library with all the titles.
