More than a hundred secondary education students from eighty schools from fifty cities in Catalonia took part, on 20 January, in the 1st Women’s Catalan Mathematical Olympiad (OMCaF).

More than a hundred secondary education students from eighty schools from fifty cities in Catalonia took part, on 20 January, in the 1st Women’s Catalan Mathematical Olympiad (OMCaF).

The aim of this initiative, organized by the Catalan Society of Mathematics, the Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics of the Technical University of Barcelona (UPC), the Department of Mathematics of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Sciences of the University of Barcelona (UB), was to promote mathematical vocations and spread the passion for this science.

The event took place at the UPC’s Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics. The top classified students, who will take part in the selection process of the European Girls Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) were:

  • Ekaterina Leksina: gold medal, absolute winner, scoring 10 in the test
  • Eulàlia Gaya Bretones: gold medal
  • Maria Bugrim: gold medal
  • Maria Borrell Ferrero: silver medal
  • Vera Morancho Bargas: silver medal
  • Dina Markhanovskaya: silver medal
  • Candela Osberger Serrano: bronze medal
  • Alba Jarrett Rodellar: bronze medal
  • Regina Jiménez Borrell: bronze medal

The medal awards ceremony was conducted by the president of the Catalan Society of Mathematics, Montserrat Alsina; the rector of the UPC, Daniel Crespo; the vice-dean for Research of the UB’s Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Joana Cirici, and the dean of the UAB’s Faculty of Sciences, Juan Jesús Donaire.
