José Milicua Illarramendi (1921-2013) was professor of History of Art at the University of Barcelona. Between 1975 and 1978 he directed the former Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts. His role was essential to turn the school into a faculty and add it to the UB in 1978. His main study area was Spanish and Italian painting of the 17th Century. In this field, he published several articles in scientific journals and exhibition catalogues. He is internationally recognized as an expert on Caravaggio and on one of his disciples, José de Ribera, Lo Spagnoletto. He is also known for his role as scientific advisor in museums such as Picasso Museum Barcelona or Museo del Prado, where he was appointed chairperson of the Royal Patronage.

The book to be presented gathers thirty-six studies by Milicua, the most significant ones, with some unpublished one, such as the one dedicated to Pablo Picasso. It has four articles by figures linked to the professor from different fields, apart from a wide bibliography and a thorough bibliography.
