The webinar on the coronavirus “The COVID-19: Emerging and Future Challenges in Dentistry”, organized by the UB, gathered about 800 international odontologists online on May 2, to debate on how to adapt procedures and improve the safety of professionals in the actions within the COVID-19 frame.

Odontologists are working on several aspects, among which are the right disinfection in their workplace to avoid contagion and to improve the safety of professionals, as well as to prevent any spread among patients. This also includes advice from microbiologists, epidemiologists, clinics and professional schools as well as the professionals and patients who visit the clinic. In some cases, this also requires a change in the system of some processes, in order to limit the generation of aerosols.

During this lockdown, the Dental Hospital of the UB (HOUB), managed by the Josep Finestres-UB Foundation, has been open and the staff has worked on more than 385 visits to attend to dental urgencies.

The webinar was organized and led by José López, lecturer of the Department of Odonto-stomatology, co-director of the masterʼs degree on Medicine and Surgery and Oral Implantology of the UB and assistant director of the HOUB, and Antoni Marí, lecturer at the Department of Clinical Sciences, co-director of the mentioned masterʼs degree and head of Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the Bellvitge University Hospital. The organization counted on the support from the lecturer Raúl Ayuso Montero, from the Department of Odonto-stomatology.

Among the participants in the webinar were Miquel Viñas, professor at the Departmengt of Pathology and Experimental Therapeutics, who talked about the SARS-CoV-2 virology; Guillermo Cuervo, doctor at the Service of Infectious Diseases in the Bellvitge University Hospital, who explained the impact of COVID-19 in the reality of a university and third hospital, and Kwang Bum Park, lecturer at the Faculty of Dentistry at the Kyungpook National University (South Corea), who talked about disinfection and measures to be taken in dentistry after COVID-19.

In the previous chat -with 340 messages- participants asked doubts related to the dental practice, and potential effects of the use of disinfectants, as well as the efficiency of oral aspiration, and other questions related to the pandemic in general, such as the potential mutations of coronavirus or the credibility of the epidemiological data.
