On Tuesday 13 May, the weekly activity planned within the project La ciència de lʼaigua (The water science) of La UB Divulga begins at 4.30 p.m. with a guided tour of the storm water tank of Zona Universitària. Then, at 6 p.m., at Roca Barcelona Gallery, Jaume Font i Garolera, lecturer from the Department of Physical Geography and Regional Geographical Analysis of UB, pronounces the lecture "Aigua i territori" (Water and territory). It analyses the relationships established between humans and water and tries to answer some questions: how do we use water? Do we make a responsible use of water? What water supply infrastructures have been developed? How do we supply water to cities and irrigated lands?

Guided tour of the storm water tank of Zona Universitària

The storm water detention tank of Zona Universitària is located under the streets Pascual i Vila and Baldiri Reixac. Its main goal is to reduce floods, particularly in the areas of Riera Blanca, Joan XXIII Avenue and Ronda del Mig. The tank's capacity is 106,000 cubic metres, more or less like the capacity of 42 olympic swimming pools. It is the biggest tank in Barcelona. The free guided tour is given by a technician from Barcelona Cicle de l'Aigua. If you are interested in attending the visit, please fill in the registration form and confirm your attendance to the visit on the section Comentaris.

Lecture "Aigua i territori"

The lecturer Font i Garolera analyses the precipitation regime of Barcelona, a city where spring and autumn rainstorm are frequent. He explains that rains are sometimes so intense that the drainage network has not enough capacity, so some neighbourhoods are flooded and the coast is polluted. To avoid these negative consequences, some storm water tanks have been built in Barcelona. After heavy rains, water is release slowly, so it can be treated at treatment plants. These tanks are probably the most hidden infrastructures of the city. Activities are free but registration is required.

The activity is part of the project La ciència de lʼaigua, of La UB Divulga, co-organised by the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC+I) of UB and Roca. The main objective of the project is to make a transversal and multidisciplinary analysis of water by means of a series of lectures pronounced by UB experts on diverse subject areas: physical geography, ecology, microbiology, history, economics, law, chemical engineering and geochemistry.
