On Friday 16 December, the Governing Council of the University of Barcelona approved the budgets for 2012, with 28 votes in favour, no vote against, and 11 abstentions.

The total budget for 2012 is 368.22 million euros, reflecting a fall of 2.95% with respect to the 2011 budget of 379.41 million euros. However, if the projected dedicated income of 30.6 million euros - an increase on the 12.81 million euros for 2011 - is not taken into account, the total 2012 budget is 7.9% lower in real terms.

In terms of revenue, the most substantial decrease will be seen in funding received directly from the Generalitat de Catalunya, which will drop from 273.76 million euros for 2011 to 220.8 million euros for 2012. This reduction is due to cuts in public spending announced during 2011.

In terms of expenditure, staff spending (teaching and research staff, administrative and service staff, and other groups) will decrease from 264.23 million euros to 254.4 million euros, which represents a reduction of 3.7 %. However, the greatest proportional decrease will affect ordinary operating expenditure, which will be reduced 20.9% from 38.91 million euros for 2011 to a projected 30.75 for 2012.

The University of Barcelona has applied the largest cuts to ordinary operating expenditure in an effort to maintain all members of staff. To compensate for the significant drop in public funding, this will also entail efforts to substantially increase self-generated income through more efficient management of UB services, foundations and non-official courses. These improvements, which should be consolidated over 2012, have already been introduced over recent years, and it is hoped that they will ensure a rise of approximately 10% on self-generated income for 2011.

The budgets, which have been approved by the Governing Council and the economic committees of the Governing Council and the Board of Trustees, are now pending final approval by the Board of Trustees in Plenary Session, which has been scheduled for 23 December.
