The distinguished Scholar award of the European Second Language Association (EUROSLA) was given this year to Professor Carmen Muñoz, from the University of Barcelona, an outstanding researcher in multilingualism and second language learning. According to the jury, Muñoz has inspired many PhD students and early-career researches. She has contributed significantly to the shaping of the field in areas as diverse as the role of age, of in-school and out-of-school language exposure, and individual differences and aptitude in instructed second language learning.

The distinguished Scholar award of the European Second Language Association (EUROSLA) was given this year to Professor Carmen Muñoz, from the University of Barcelona, an outstanding researcher in multilingualism and second language learning. According to the jury, Muñoz has inspired many PhD students and early-career researches. She has contributed significantly to the shaping of the field in areas as diverse as the role of age, of in-school and out-of-school language exposure, and individual differences and aptitude in instructed second language learning.

Carmen Muñoz is a Professor of English Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at the University of Barcelona and coordinator of the GRAL research group. Her main research interests are in the fields of foreign language acquisition and bilingualism. She has directed a number of research projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and has also participated in international research. Between 1995 and 2003 she coordinated the BAF Project (Barcelona Age Factor, check BELC Corpus). She has been vice-president of the European Second Language Association (EUROSLA), member of the International Committee of AILA and member of the Executive Committee of the Spanish Association of Applied Linguistics (AESLA). She is a member of editorial boards of international and national refereed journals: The Modern Language Journal, International Review of Applied Linguistics; Language Teaching Research; Atlantis; Resla; Estudios de Linguística Inglesa Aplicada; Estudios Ingleses de la Universidad Complutense; Vial. She obtained an ICREA Academia award in 2010 (for 2011-2015).


Since 2014, EuroSLA annually presents a distinguished scholar award to an individual who has carried out outstanding research in the field of Second Language Acquisition. An annual prize is also awarded for the best contribution to the EuroSLA Yearbook.
