On 13th and 14th December, at 8.30 p.m., the Paranymph Hall hosts the traditional Christmas Concert offered by the UB within the 26th Music Series at the University, organized by the Office of the vice-rector for Arts, Culture and Heritage. On this occasion, the musical piece to perform is the Carmina Burana cantata, by Carl Orff. The tickets sold out only after a few hours of their availability. This year, the concert coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Orchestra of the University of Barcelona (OUB).

Apart from the Orchestra UB, the Choir of the University of Barcelona, the Schola Cantorum Universitaria Barcinonensis, the Cor Vivace, the Cor Cantabile, the Cor Coreli, the childrenʼs choir Picarols and the soloists Marta Arbonès (soprano), Víctor Jiménez (counter-tenor) and Lluís Sintes (baritone) also participate in the event.

Carmina Burana is a 20th century cantata, whose text is a collection of medieval poems named carmina burana, gathered together in a manuscript found in Benediktbeuern (Germany), which exalt the joy of living and its pleasures, as well as a satirical critic of that period.

This concert commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Orchestra of the University of Barcelona, conducted by Carles Gumí and composed mainly by university students. The orchestra is also composed by members of the teaching staff, former students, and people who keep any kind of relation with the University. This quality amateur orchestra answers to the Universityʼs status of cultural centre; and it has a position in Catalan musical scene. The director Carles Gumí gives “a really positive” assessment of these first ten years of the OUB: “The Orchestra has not stopped growing and has improved the quality of its performance, as well as the difficulty of its repertoire”, affirms. The future challenge is to stabilize and consolidate the orchestra. The OUB is also working in two special concerts that it will give to commemorate its 10th anniversary during the two next terms of the 26th Music Series.

The concerts of the Music Series at the University are addressed to all the university community: teaching staff, students, administrative and service staff, and society in general. All performances take place in the Paranymph Hall of the Historic Building. Tickets for the concert are sold out.
