Professor Lourdes Ibáñez receives the National Award for Research 2014
Lourdes Ibáñez, tenured-university lecturer of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona (UB), receives the National Award for Research 2014 conferred by the Government of Catalonia and the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRi). The award ceremony takes place on Tuesday 28 April at the Auditori de Barcelona. The event is chaired by President Artur Mas and attended by the vici-rector for Science Policy of the UB, Dr Enric I. Canela.
Lourdes Ibáñez, tenured-university lecturer of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona (UB), receives the National Award for Research 2014 conferred by the Government of Catalonia and the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRi). The award honours those researchers who have recently made a significant contribution on an international scale to the progress of a scientific discipline in any sphere. Lourdes Ibáñez, lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Radiology and Anatomy of the UB, has developed a twenty-five year research on paediatric endocrinology (the study of hormone-related conditions in children). Moreover, she has headed the research team on Adult-Age Disorders Originating in the Foetal Period or in the Early Years of Life of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona since 2008.
Ibáñez has led studies on how female hyperandrogenism (excessive production of androgens, male hormones) and low birth weight may produce several alterations and disease in adults. Among adult diseases originated in the foetal period or in the early years, we find endocrine and metabolic alterations and heart diseases, as well as an increase in the risk to develop early puberty and type 2 diabetes.
Besides Lourdes Ibáñez, the National Awards for Research 2014 have been conferred on other prestigious researchers and institutions. Romain Quidant, ICREA research professor at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), has received the National Young Talent Award for Research; the Botín Foundation has received the National Award for Scientific Sponsorship for its commitment to several Catalan research centres; the Consorci Residència dʼInvestigadors (CSIC- Government of Catalonia) has received the National Award for Scientific Communication, and the company Matgas 2000 AIE has received the National Award for the Public-Private Partnership in Research and Innovation.
