Manel Esteller and Josep Samitier receive the Narcís Monturiol 2020 Medal

Professors Manel Esteller, from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Josep Samitier, from the Faculty of Physics, were awarded the Narcís Monturiol 2020 Medal to the scientific and technological merit. The ceremony, which counted on the attendance of the rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia, took place in the Auditorium of the Palace of the Generalitat. The Catalan Government awards these prizes, introduced in 1982, to a total of ten figures of the Catalan knowledge system.

 

Manel Esteller i Badosa is a professor at the Department of Physiological Sciences of the UB. With a doctorate in Medicine from the University of Barcelona, he received training in the Vall d'Hebrón University Hospital, the Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore, United States) and the National Centre of Oncological Research (CNIO). He returned to Catalonia as the director of the program in Epigenetics and Biology of Cancer of the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL). He is currently an ICREA researcher and leads the research line of Epigenetics of Cancer in the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC), of which he is the director as well. He has placed epigenetics at the forefront of biomedicine. 

 

Josep Samitier i Martí  is a professor at the Department of Electronic and Biomedical Engineering of the University of Barcelona. Director of the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), he is member of the Institute for Catalan Studies (IEC) and founder member of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology  (EIT Health). He promotes nanobioengineering through the Research Group on Nanobioengineering at IBEC and coordinates the Spanish Platform for Nanomedicine (NANOMED Spain). In 2008, he was acting rector of the UB.
