The international publishing house Multilingual Matters, settled in United Kingdom, has recently published the book Survival and development of language communities: prospects and challenges, edited by the professor from the Department of Catalan and director of the Centre for Sociolinguistics and Communication (CUSC) of the UB,F. Xavier Vila. It is the first volume that comes from the project Medium-Sized Language Communities, developed mainly by UB teaching and research staff. The book is composed by seven articles about seven medium-sized language communities written by prestigious authors who describe the current situation of these languages and the challenges they will have to face during the 21st century.

The research project Medium-Sized Language Communities was designed by the executive team of CUSC in order to determine which legal, social, political, economic, cultural, or other factors favour or hamper the maintenance and development of language communities in the age of industrialization and nation-states. It also analyses in which manner globalization and information society have produced changes in medium-sized language communities. The project also considers if it can be affirmed that these changes have really given place to a new relation between language and society in medium-sized language communities and what conditions they need to survive, especially in the case of historical minority languages.

Multilingual Matters is an international and independent company which publishes works about bilingualism, second language learning, sociolinguistics and translation, among other related topics.
