The Group on Material Characterisation of Heritage, from the Department of Analytical Chemistry of the UB, and the Department of Preventive Conservation of Picasso Museum in Barcelona work together in order to carry out the research Early stages of Picasso through material characterization of different portraits. The research is part of the European project Cultural Heritage Advanced Research Infrastructures (CHARISMA), coordinated by Dr B. Brunetti, from the University of Perugia, which facilitates the use of the mobile laboratory MOLAB. The laboratory enables to perform in-situ non-invasive measurements without any sampling or contact with their surface.

The works that are being studied belong to the Museumʼs collection. They are six early stage portraits: Retrat de Vell (Portrait of an old man), Man with a Benet, Self-portrait with Wig, Portrait of Carles Casagemas, Retrat dʼun desconegut (Portrait of a stranger) and Head of a Man in El Greco Style, dated between 1895 and 1900. This period is particularly interesting because it matches his last stay in La Coruña and his stay in Barcelona. The study of these portraits will complement the one performed by the Museumʼs Department of Preventive Conservation four years ago on the work Self-portrait with Wig and will provide new information about the evolution of Picassoʼs creative process.

MOLAB is in Barcelona from 8 to 12 July.
