The Barcelona Science Park hosted the 5th anniversary of DTI Foundation - Donation & Transplantation Institute, an institution located at PCB which aims at advising, training and supporting professionals from public and private organizations in the field of donation and transplantation of organs, tissues and human cells in worldwide regions and countries.

The Barcelona Science Park hosted the 5th anniversary of DTI Foundation - Donation & Transplantation Institute, an institution located at PCB which aims at advising, training and supporting professionals from public and private organizations in the field of donation and transplantation of organs, tissues and human cells in worldwide regions and countries.

 

The event took place on 20 June. The personalities who participated in it were: Dr Martí Manyalich, President of DTI Foundation; Dr José M. García Buitrón, Executive Vice-President of the Foundation; Dr Francesc Cardellach, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the UB; Dr Pere A. Montserrat, Director of the Catalan Transplant Organization (OCATT); and the members of DTI Foundation, Ricard Valero, Investigation Director; M. Paula Gómez, Medical Director, and Gloria Páez, Educational Director, among other prominent figures from healthcare, business and academia communities.

 
During his speech, Dr Manyalich highlighted that “worldwide organ transplantation needs are only covered in a 10 %; we need to carry out one million transplantation procedures per year to eliminate transplant waiting lists”. Besides, Dr José M. García Buitrón emphasized the need to export the figure of transplantation coordinator promoted by DTI Foundation to other countries and affirmed that “donations and transplantations are programmes of healthcare development and social cohesion”.
 
Dr Francesc Cardellach, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the UB, remarked the present and future commitment with teaching staff in order to enhance studentsʼ training quality. “The Faculty of Medicine of the UB —he explained— has 22 yearsʼ experience in the field of donation and transplantation of organs, tissues and cells. DTI Foundation, with the experience added by the programme TPM (Transplant Procurement Management), constitutes the ideal framework to carry out and consolidate these goals”.

DTI Foundation (Donation and Transplantation Institute) is a non-profit organization founded in Barcelona in April 2008 by a group of internationally recognized experts in the field of donation and transplantation who are advised by a consultant group from the business world, business schools, education, pharmaceutical industry and marketing, among others. The main objectives of the organization are to increase organ donation and prevent trafficking and illegal trading, enhance knowledge, skills and abilities that professionals involved in this field need, and carry out research and development projects in order to increase access opportunities to transplantation.
