About 160 secondary students attend a research workshop at the UB in which they work with data provided by the Large Hadron Collider of the CERN

The Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the UB (ICCUB) organises two sessions (on 7th and 13th March) of the Particle Physics Workshop, in which a total of 160 Catalan upper secondary students participate. During the activity, which takes place at the Faculty of Physics of the UB, from 9.30 a.m. and 6 p.m., students will be able to analyse data registered some months ago by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located at the headquarters of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), in Geneva (Switzerland). The workshop takes places at the same time than the CERN exhibition “The largest scientific instrument ever built”, which describes Catalan contribution to the research carried out at this laboratory.

Workshop addressed to students strongly motivated by Physics

The workshop is part of the International initiative to disseminate science Hands on Particle Physics, in which more than 9,000 worldwide students are enrolled. This year, there are 560 enrolments of Catalan students of the second year of upper-secondary education. All are strongly motivated by Physics, but only 160 of them will be able to finally attend the activity.

The workshop is divided into two parts. In the first one, students attend to lectures given by researchers who work at the LHC; the most important concepts of particle physics are introduced. In the second part, attendants develop a work in which they look for interesting particles among the data of collisions provided by the LHC and they study their properties. They exchange their results with the ones obtained at other European universities by means of a video conference. So the importance of International collaboration in this field of knowledge is highlighted.

150 universities and laboratories from 32 countries participate in this international initiative, which has been carried out eight times. The initiative is coordinated by the Technical University of Dresden and the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG), composed by an independent committee of scientific dissemination representatives from the different countries which made up the CERN.

Catalan research at the CERN

The workshop happens at the same time than the CERN exhibition “The largest scientific instrument ever built”, which can be visited from 8th to 26th March in CosmoCaixa Barcelona. It describes Catalan contribution to the research carried out at this European laboratory. A round table on the future of CERN in the current crisis situation opened the exhibition on 7th March. In addition, other activities have been planned: some science dissemination sessions addressed to the general public and groups of students, and some teacher training sessions within the European project Pathway.

A research group on Particle Physics from the UBʼs Institute of Cosmos Sciences is involved in the LHCbeauty experiment (LHCb), one of the four main detectors that studies the collisions generated by the LHC. The results obtained from this and other experiment developed at this laboratory have already had an important impact on questions such as the detection of asymmetries between matter and antimatter or the research on the existence of Higgs boson.
