Until June 25, the Mathematics and Computer Science CRAI Library holds an exhibition about José María Orts Aracil, mathematician and lecturer at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Barcelona who promoted the Library of Mathematics in 1928. The exhibition is part of the exhibition program “Matemàtics Catalans”, organized by CRAI since 2016.

Until June 25, the Mathematics and Computer Science CRAI Library holds an exhibition about José María Orts Aracil, mathematician and lecturer at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Barcelona who promoted the Library of Mathematics in 1928. The exhibition is part of the exhibition program “Matemàtics Catalans”, organized by CRAI since 2016.

A selection of monographs, lesson notes and contributions to prestigious journals build up the documentation to be shown in the exhibition.

In his career as lecturer, Orts outstood for his task in the Mathematics Seminar, for being the founder and director of Collectanea Mathematica, a prestigious journal edited by the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, and making the UB able to confer the honorary doctorate titles without having to go to Madrid to do so. In the University of Barcelona, Orts is remembered for his way to make learning easy for students, an attitude he promoted since he created the Library of the Faculty.

 

 

José María Orts Aracil (1891-1968) graduated in Exact Sciences in 1914 at the University of Barcelona, where he began his career as chair assistant in Mathematical Analysis. Dedicated to teaching, he is author of a large work, mainly in collaborations for scientific journals. He held the position of director of the Mathematics Seminar and founded the journal Collectanea Mathematica, which he directed until he died. He was numerary academician of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona, member of the Spanish National Research Council, vice-director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and director or the National Institute of Mathematics.
