Jaume Casals, Rector of the UPF, new President of the Catalan Association of Public Universities

On January 24, 2017, the new board of directors of the Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP) has been constituted. The board is formed by the Rector of the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), Jaume Casals, as President, and the Rector of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Open University of Catalonia, UOC), Josep Anton Planell, as Vice-President. The President of the Social Council of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Ramon Carbonell, and the President of the Social Council of the University of Lleida (UdL), Delfí Robinat, are second and third vice-presidents, respectively. Sergi Bonet, Rector of the University of Girona (UdG) is the Secretary.

Now, Jaume Casals, Rector of the UPF, takes Sergi Bonetʼs office, Rector of the UdG leading ACUP. Casals has been the rector of the UPF since 2013. Since 2003, he has been professor of Philosophy at the same university and doctor in Philosophy, extraordinary prize by UAB (1984). He is also full member of the Institute for Catalan Studies. Before becoming rector, he was the president of the Study Council and executive vice-president of the Continuing Education Institute (IDEC) of the UPC, and vice-rector for Postgraduate and Doctoral studies (2001-2005) and Teaching staff (2005-2009).

Rectors from the universities represent the institution in the ACUPʼs General Assembly, the highest governing body of the Association. The presidency relapses annually and in a pre-established rotating way for the university rectors. Since 2008, presidents of Social Councils or equal positions of the member universities were added as members of the General Assembly of the Association.
