Josep Carreras Barnés, professor from the Department of Physiological Sciences I, received the 5th Antonio Gallego Prize for his excellent career in medical education; it is a biennial award conferred by the Spanish Society for Medical Education (SEDEM). The award ceremony took place on 9 October at the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid, within the opening of the 21st Congress of SEDEM.

Josep Carreras Barnés, professor from the Department of Physiological Sciences I, received the 5th Antonio Gallego Prize for his excellent career in medical education; it is a biennial award conferred by the Spanish Society for Medical Education (SEDEM). The award ceremony took place on 9 October at the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid, within the opening of the 21st Congress of SEDEM.

SEDEM created this prize to honour professors of Health Sciences whose work in the field of medical education has an important scientific and academic value, social projection and international dissemination.

Emeritus Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Dr Carreras has received several honours: the Narcís Monturiol Medal conferred by the Government of Catalonia (1991), the Health Teaching Prize given by the Medical Promotion Foundation of Barcelona (1992), he was appointed honorary member of the Medical Education Association of Catalonia (1996), the Professional Excellence Award conferred by the Official College of Physicians of Barcelona (2004) and the Vicens Vives Prize for Teaching Quality given by the Government of Catalonia (2007). His research has been mainly focused on enzymology and the metabolism of phosphoglycerate and glucose 6-phosphate, as well as on the carbamylation of proteins and the effects of cyanate and mercury.
