The Catalan Childrenʼs University (Universitat dels Nens i les Nenes de Catalunya, UdN².cat) is a programme organised by the eight Catalan universities which compose the Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP). The main objective of this programme is to bring University, science and culture closer to children, primary schools and families.

On Wednesday 13th February, within the third edition of the UdN².cat, the Food and Nutrition campus of the UB (located in Santa Coloma de Gramenet) hosts 125 children who come from three primary schools in Barcelona and Santa Coloma de Gramenet. From 9 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. four workshops will take place: Màgia amb aliments (Food Magic), Gelatines i esferificacions (Jellies and Spherification), Tria el teu esmorzar (Choose your snack) and Fes dʼinspector dʼaliments (Be a food inspector). All the activities will be conducted by UB teaching staff and are focused on nutrition, food technology and food security. The aim is to disseminate the research on these topics carried out at the Food and Nutrition campus of the UB among children. Kids will participate in every workshop and, to end, they will share their new knowledge in an interactive session.

These activities are supported by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Students and Language Policy and they have been coordinated by the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the UB.

The Catalan Childrenʼs University

This year, one thousand year 5 primary students from several Catalan schools will visit any of the six universities which compose the ACUP and participate in some activities organised by these higher education institutions. It is the third “Lʼescola a la universitat”, an activity planned within the programme UdN².cat.

UdN² is a programme of reference for Catalan primary schools and universities which widens childrenʼs expectations, compensates social inequalities and promotes school success; at the same time, it breaks down the barriers between science and society, and university and school, and remarks the role of university as an agent of social development. UdN² aims at increasing school success by promoting knowledge and a critical turn of mind.

Its main objectives are: to highlight the role of universities as agents of social development and creation of knowledge, culture and thought; to inform about higher education options to promote equal opportunities; to arouse scientific vocations; to provide new tools to facilitate teaching at schools; and to promote dialogue among university, primary schools and families.
