The Catalan Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy was born in 1898 from the Medical and Pharmaceutical Academy, founded in 1876. Its creation answered the necessity of establishing new communication channels among health professionals to promote health education and disease prevention campaigns. The doctrine of the Catalan Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy defends the unification of health specializations, and contributes to the necessary health education of society.

The institute has been led by different prestigious experts, the doctors: E. Ribas i Ribas, G. Roqueta i González, P. Nubiola i Espinós, A. Pi i Suñer, J. Peyrí i Rocamora, A. Pedro i Pons, R. Sarró i Burbano, F. Cardenal i Navarro, M. Broggi and J. L. Gómez Caamaño. Nowadays, it is presided by Dr Anna M. Carmona i Cornet, and its honorary president is Dr Moisès Broggi.

During the last years, the Catalan Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy has been fostering health education among citizens in order to prevent diseases. It has organized some free-elective credits courses for all the students of the UB. Recently, an agreement between the Healthy University of Barcelona and the Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy has been signed in order to carry out the educative programmes of the Health Promoting Dr Moisès Broggi Classroom.
