Today, Thursday 7th March, at 4 p.m., the Faculty of Economics and Business hosts a lecture given by the professor from the University of California Berkeley Michael Burawoy, president of the International Sociological Association (ISA) and creator of the concept of public sociology, in other words, a sociology which serve people and is connected to civil society movements. During his speech at the UB, which is part of the International Sociological Debates Seminar of the UB (ISDUB), Burawoy will analyse the challenges posed to sociology by movements such as the Indignant Movement, squatting movements, or the so-called Arab Spring.

Michael Burawoy research includes the analysis of working conditions in countries such as Zambia, Hungary, Russia and the United States. He based his research on specific cases in order to obtain wider conclusions. For example, he worked in factories in different continents to experience life conditions. Manufacturing consent: changes in the labor process under monopoly capitalism is one of his works; his research has dealt with topics such as post-colonialism or the transition from socialism to capitalism. After many years making field work, in 2004, when he was the president of the American Sociological Association (ASA), he opened the debate on the role of public sociology, the one that goes beyond the academy, but continues to be scientific, and gives answers to society.

The lecture series ISDUB, organised for the time this year and open to the general public, will offer throughout the academic year several lectures given by prestigious international experts. Some of these experts are: Erik Orlin Wright, 2012 president of the American Sociological Association and professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Sonia Arbaci, from the Bartlett School of Planning at the University College London; and John Mohr, from the University of California-Santa Barbara. The speakers collaborate with the research groups that organise the lecture series, so each lecture will be previously introduced by the UB researchers who collaborate with them. The ISDUB has been thought as a high quality activity to promote international scientific debate among social scientists, taking into account sociology as a fundamental science to understand problems and contribute to society conflicts resolution.
