His speech at the University of Barcelona analyses the increase of underground economy in Spain in the present context of economic crisis and compares Spanish situation with other European countries.

Since 1979, Professor Schneider collects data on underground economy. Periodically, he publishes a report that estimates the size of underground economy in some countries. His publication means a model for many countries and points out some actions to be carried out by administrations. According to 2013 data, Spanish underground economy (undeclared work and the inadequate registration of sales and services turnover are included) is 18.6% of GDP. The figure is similar to European average (18.5%) but higher than in countries like Germany (13%), France and the United Kingdom (10%).
