The scholarship is conferred by the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst, DAAD) to recognize the importance that international students have for German universities.

The DAAD is an institution devoted to encourage international academic cooperation, mainly by means of students and professors exchange programmes. German universities who have more than thirty international students can give this scholarship to the most excellent international student who is part of the institution. The grant is valued at 1,000 euros.

In 2012, 217 participated in the programme. The main aim of this initiative is to prove that international students are welcomed and important for German universities.
