This year, the Institute for Research on Medieval Cultures (IRCVM) of the UB devotes its Conference on Medieval Cultures to the analysis of Sant Climent de Taüll, a Romanesque church, from the perspective of the research that is being developed by historians to its value as heritage and tourist attraction. The conference, organised by the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC), the Culture Department of the Government of Catalonia and IRCVM, takes place in MNAC on Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th April.

Sant Climent de Taüll is a complex monument. On one hand, MNAC houses and exhibits great part of churchʼs paintings and furniture. On the other hand, during the works carried out during the past years, some decoration fragments have been discovered and restored. Furthermore, a musealization of the church will take place soon; the Catalan minister for Culture, Ferran Mascarell, announced it in March. Besides being an interesting place for university researchers, the church (property of the Diocese of Urgell) is one of the main tourist attractions of the area.

The opening of the conference will be conducted by Pepe Serra, director of MNAC; Joan Pluma, director general of Archives, Libraries, Museums and Heritage of the Government of Catalonia, and Carles Mancho, director of IRCVM. The opening speech, entitled “Sant Climent de Taüll: la recerca versus la icona”, will be given by Milagros Guardia, professor of Ancient and Medieval History of Art of the UB, head of the Consolidated Research Group on Analysis and Research into Painting and Iconography of Late Antique and High Middle Ages (Ars Picta), and member of IRCVM.

A round table entitled “Sant Climent de Taüll: present i futur dʼun símbol” (Sant Climent de Taüll: present and futur of a symbol) takes place on Thursday 11th, at 6 p.m. The personalities that will participate in the round table are: Immaculada Lorés, member of the research group Ars Picta and IRCVM; Joan Perelada, mayor of Vall de Boí; Josep Manuel Rueda, deputy director of Architectural, Archaeological and Palaeontological Heritage of the Catalan Culture Department; Jordi Camps, curator of the Department of Romanesque of MNAC; Àngels Solé, director of the Furniture Restoration Centre of the Government of Catalonia, and the priest Josep Maria Mauri, delegate of Heritage of the Diocese of Urgell.
