Objectives and competences

This course examines theoretical, methodological and practical aspects of sustainable food systems, placing an emphasis on the social, political, economic and environmental contexts that shape and are shaped by the abovementioned elements in order to understand what constitutes a sustainable food system. Practical aspects of this course include: A visit/interview with food companies and agrifood parks, a visit to a school canteen, an interactive in-class activity where students measure their carbon footprints, and more. Particularly suitable for students with a background in environmental studies, agricultural studies & education

Objectives

-Apply systems thinking tools to the analysis of food systems.
-Analyse food systems research results and policies for evidence-based assessments and ethical decision-making.
-Communicate clearly and effectively about food systems through writing and oral presentations in a professional setting of diverse peers.
-Engage in respectful dialogue, collaborative teamwork, and problem solving with those of differing viewpoints and backgrounds.

- Students from educational institutions in the United States with an international agreement with specialized entities.
- In exceptional circumstances, places may be filled by national and international students who have proof of a high level of English.

Access requirements and conditions

The course is also open to students with no prior university education, who will acquire the same knowledge and skills and receive a specific qualification for their learner group. Information on the access requirements and other conditions can be obtained from the course directors.
