Objectives and competences

This master's degree has been offered since 1995 with the aim of training students to analyse the ethical, legal and social implications of biotechnology and biomedicine. The master's degree allows students to study and understand bioethical issues from an interdisciplinary, pluralistic and secular perspective. Created by Dr Dr María Casado and is co-organized by the Bioethics and Law Observatory research centre, which is supported by the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics at the University of Barcelona and is part of the ethics and skills training programme.

Objectives

- To acquire a general, integrated understanding of bioethics and its legal implications with regard to internationally recognized human rights.
- To acquire interdisciplinary training in the approach to bioethical problems and dilemmas resulting from the application of scientific and technological advances, and in the way these problems can be dealt with legally.
- To be able to make rational decisions in conflict situations with scarce resources, on problems associated with the emergence of scientific and technological advances.
- To learn to work as part of a team.
- To become a specialist in bioethics and law who can meet the growing demand in this field.

Recommended applicant profile

- Applicants in positions of responsibility in different fields, such as health care (heads and coordinators of hospital services) and biomedical research in public and private research centres.
- Members of ethics and bioethics committees.
- Legal practitioners, judges, jurists, coordinators of legal areas related to bioethics, government officers and representatives of the pharmaceutical industry.
- Biotechnologists.
- Journalists, science communicators, university lecturers of degree and postgraduate courses and secondary school teachers.
- Philosophers, health economists, lawyers, doctors and health professionals, pharmacists, graduates in law.
- and those who work in the formation of attitudes and values.

Admission requirements:
- Degree, diploma or equivalent university qualification.
- In addition to applicants' curriculums, credit will be given for previous experience in bioethics, plans to use the training, and social interest.
