Objectives and competences

The master's degree aims to analyse the various histories of incarceration and punishment that have been developed by various bodies of knowledge (legal, philosophical, sociological, economic and cultural) to, subsequently, examine the various national and international systems for the protection of the fundamental rights of persons deprived of liberty. This route, traced chronologically and through its European and American paths, allows access to a contemporary understanding of prison reality that is very rarely examined.

Objectives and competences

Objectives

- To study in depth a plot of criminal, political and sociological knowledge deeply forgotten by traditional knowledge, such as the field of punishment and (sanctioning/castigation/?) and, more specifically, that relating to the deprivation of personal liberty.
- To learn all aspects of the problem of punishment with a deep interdisciplinary dimension that affects the subjectivity of those who live in the corresponding institutions as people deprived of their personal freedom, and those in charge of managing and governing those institutions. Traditionally, scientific and academic hegemonic knowledge has not focused on the dimension that qualifies criminal law itself, which is the area of punishment. However, criminal law is characterized by the punitive dimension.
