Objectives and competences
The objective of this master's degree is to provide quality education in the field of literary analysis that matches the cultural realities of the modern world, marked by increasing contact and exchange between cultures in an overarching process of globalization. The goal is for students to develop cultural and text analysis skills and the ability to evaluate the phenomena of intercultural reception, which are essential for the critical appraisal of changing, plural realities.
The degree has a study load of 60 credits, divided as follows: 12 credits for compulsory subjects, 12 credits for compulsory specialization subjects, 24 credits for optional subjects, and 12 credits for the individual final project.

Objectives and competences
Objectives
Within this general framework, students will be able to select one of the two specializations offered, according to their personal interests. This specialization is the first step in the process of introducing students to advanced research, which is one of the main aims of the degree. Specifically, students will carry out a supervised final project, which will be presented and defended in a public session before a panel of examiners. The degree course is the taught stage of the official doctoral programme of the same name, which has received the Spanish government's quality award (MEC:ME2011-0583).
Competences
Upon completion of the master's degree, students will be able to:
- understand and identify concepts, problems and fundamental issues in any kind of discussion on the construction of cultural identity.
- Interpret texts from different eras and cultural traditions.
- Develop the ability to reflect, showing awareness of their own thoughts and recognizing and evaluating theories and different points of view in the area of literary and cultural studies.
- Think independently, displaying critical and self-critical capabilities, developing original problem-solving strategies, generating new ideas, and defining objects or fields of study on the construction and representation of cultural identity.
- Manage information, extracting and summarizing information from different sources, and making effective use of libraries, archives, newspaper and periodicals libraries and other sources (particularly electronic sources) that are appropriate for humanities research.
- Carry out basic research and be up-to-date with studies undertaken by the international scientific community in the field of cultural, literary and gender studies.
- Work in a team, collaborating with others and contributing to a common project, and participating in cross-disciplinary and multicultural teams.
Specific competences:
Successful students will also be able to:
- Display advanced knowledge of the theories and methods of interculturality, globalization, postcolonial studies and the analysis of different text types.
- Display in-depth knowledge of the philological tools required to analyse complex texts and carry out comparative studies.
- Distinguish and apply literary, media and cultural theories and methods on identity (gender, class, sexuality, ethnic group, etc.).
- Display an understanding of the theoretical and critical tools required to prepare presentations on interculturality, alterity and globalization.
- Interpret texts and primary sources on gender.
- Analyse the associations between artistic creation and contemporary history, cultural institutions and social and political trends, taking into account colonization and globalization.

The master's degree is primarily intended for graduates in languages or humanities. Prospective students should be interested in learning more about the critical and theoretical analysis of mechanisms for constructing and representing cultural identities in a wide range of texts and contexts, with a specific focus on gender and interculturality.The course is also suitable for students with a background in other areas of the social sciences and artistic fields (such as fine arts or dramatic arts), and a fundamental interest in the advanced critical analysis of processes of constructing and representing identities in the areas of gender and interculturality.
Students who wish to take the subjects that are taught in English must have English language skills equivalent to at least level C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Access requirements and conditions
General requirementsIn accordance with Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, students wishing to be admitted to a university master's degree must hold one of the following qualifications:
- Official Spanish university degree.
- A degree issued by a higher education institution within the European Higher Education Area framework that authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue.
- A qualification issued by an institution outside the framework of the European Higher Education Area. In this case, applicants must request homologation of the degree to its equivalent official Spanish university qualification or obtain express approval from the University of Barcelona, which will conduct a study of equivalence to ensure that the degree is of a comparable level to an official Spanish university qualification and that it grants access to university master's degree study in the country of issue. Admission shall not, in any case, imply that prior qualifications have been recognized as equivalent to a Spanish master's degree and does not confer recognition for any purposes other than that of admission to the master's degree course.
Specific requirements
Candidates must meet the following academic requirements:
- Hold one (or more) of the preferred degree qualifications:
- EHEA bachelor's degree in English, Arabic and Hebrew, French or modern language and literature.
- Pre-EHEA bachelor's degree in German, English, Arabic, French, Galician and Portuguese, or Italian.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent undergraduate degree in other languages (Catalan, Classics, Spanish or Romance Languages) or in literary studies.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent undergraduate degree in humanities.
- Foreign degree qualification equivalent to one of these degrees.
- Hold one (or more) of the other recommended degree qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent undergraduate degree in an area of the humanities or social sciences: anthropology, information science, audiovisual communication, philosophy, history, history of art, fine arts, dramatic arts, education, sociology or translation.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent undergraduate degree in political and administration sciences, law or economic and business sciences.
- A foreign degree qualification equivalent to one of these degrees.

- Pre-enrolment fee: A pre-enrolment fee of 30,21 euros is charged. Students who apply to more than one master's degree must pay the fee for each pre-enrolment request. Pre-enrolment requests cannot be processed until this fee has been paid.Fees will only be refunded if the master's degree in question is suspended.
- Reserved places: A maximum of 5% of the new places of the master's degree are reserved for students who meet the general and specific access requirements and accredit the recognition of a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%.

Selection criteria
The Coordination Committee is responsible for the selection and admission of students, according to the following procedures and criteria:- Candidates will not take an admission test, but there will be a pre-enrolment period managed by the University of Barcelona, after which the Coordination Committee will evaluate the applications.
- The curriculum vitae of candidates will be assessed to determine whether they hold one of the preferred degree qualifications: at least 80% of the places will be reserved for candidates with this profile. Candidates will be selected on the strength of their academic record (65%), curriculum vitae (25%) and language skills (10%).
- Candidates who want to take subjects taught in English must have English language skills equivalent to at least level C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Notification
The Admissions Committee will be responsible for the admissions procedure during the pre-enrolment period, which is the same for all master's degree courses at the Faculty of Philology of the UB.The Committee will meet every month during the admissions period to evaluate the applications and documentation received and will announce its decisions at the ending of each month.

Placements
Placements in a company or another type of organization are an integral part of university studies, providing first-hand experience of working methodologies in students' chosen professional fields. They offer invaluable practical experience for the transition into work after graduation.
Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment. They are therefore included in the academic record. There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 500 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.
