General requirements
In accordance with Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, students wishing to be admitted to a university master's degree must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • Official Spanish university degree.

  • A degree issued by a higher education institution within the European Higher Education Area framework that authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue.

  • A qualification issued by an institution outside the framework of the European Higher Education Area. In this case, applicants must request homologation of the degree to its equivalent official Spanish university qualification or obtain express approval from the University of Barcelona, which will conduct a study of equivalence to ensure that the degree is of a comparable level to an official Spanish university qualification and that it grants access to university master's degree study in the country of issue. Admission shall not, in any case, imply that prior qualifications have been recognized as equivalent to a Spanish master's degree and does not confer recognition for any purposes other than that of admission to the master's degree course.

Notes:

  • Pre-enrolment fee: A pre-enrolment fee of 30,21 euros is charged. Students who apply to more than one master's degree must pay the fee for each pre-enrolment request. Pre-enrolment requests cannot be processed until this fee has been paid.Fees will only be refunded if the master's degree in question is suspended.
  • Reserved places: A maximum of 5% of the new places of the master's degree are reserved for students who meet the general and specific access requirements and accredit the recognition of a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%.

Current trends in diversities and communication
  • Type subject: Compulsory
  • Credits: 6
  • Description: Introduction to the main trends, perspectives and theoretical currents that address communication studies from diversities. To do this, concepts and approaches such as power, difference, inclusion and violence, among others, are worked on. It seeks to apply theoretical foundations of the interrelation between communication and diversities to problems and challenges faced by contemporary society through critical analysis.

Project management, impact and transfer of research in Communication and diversities
  • Type subject: Compulsory
  • Credits: 6
  • This subject prepares students for the conceptualization, creation, development and dissemination of communication research projects that include a theoretical and methodological perspective that addresses diversities (feminist and intersectional perspectives, ethical protocols, etc.). To this end, the subject provides tools to think and critically detect social challenges that must be addressed and design and plan research with social impact. Special attention is also dedicated to the transfer and dissemination to society of the results and materials that emerge from the projects.

Advanced quantitative methods of communication research
  • Type subject: Compulsory
  • Credits: 6
  • Description: The objective of the subject is to offer students advanced quantitative research techniques for the study of the field of communication and diversities. Tools are given to students so that they are able to define the best quantitative methodological strategies based on the objectives and research questions of their projects. Throughout the course, different quantitative techniques will be applied, students will be introduced to the use of software and data analysis tools, and discussion and the generation of conclusions will be promoted based on the methods applied and the results obtained.

Advanced qualitative communication research methods

  • Description: The objective of the subject is to offer students advanced qualitative research techniques for the study of the field of communication and diversities. Emerging research methods in communication and diversities

  • Credits: 3
  • Description: This subject aims to present, reflect on and put into practice new trends and emerging methods in communication and diversities. This is a subject that seeks to innovate in the study of research methods in the field of communication from a perspective that addresses diversities.

Intercultural communication
  • Type subject: Optional
  • Credits: 3
  • Description: This subject is carried out in BIP (Blended Intensive Program) format. BIP programs are courses organized jointly by different European universities that combine a virtual part with a short stay abroad to carry out part of the teaching. The subject is based on the fundamentals and key theoretical concepts to understand intercultural communication and devotes special attention to the challenges and opportunities of developing intercultural communication projects and actions in diverse and complex contexts. Throughout the course we will work on concepts such as ethnocentrism, non-verbal communication, stereotypes or counter-narratives, among others.



Second semester


Communication, gender and sexualities
  • Type subject: Optional
  • Credits: 3
  • Description: The subject seeks to critically reflect on the representations, interactions and constructions of gender, LGBTI+ and sexualities in the media (press, television, cinema, advertising, etc.). To do this, the basic concepts of gender and sexualities studies are used and their theoretical and methodological perspectives are applied to communication studies.

Communication, racialization and class
  • Type subject: Optional
  • Credits: 3
  • This subject attempts to apply intersectionality as a theoretical and methodological perspective from which to work on categories of difference such as class, race or age, among others, to understand the representations and interactions of society with the media. Likewise, through the development of communication research projects, key concepts and approaches to racialization processes, class relations and their intersection are applied.

Communication and health identities
  • Type subject: Optional
  • Credits: 3
  • Description: This subject seeks to analyze the role of the media in the generation and propagation of health identities and stigmas around diseases, syndromes or other health conditions. Through the subject, an attempt is made to promote more inclusive environments based on the analysis of the role of the media in the construction, deconstruction and reconstruction of health identities.

Communication, education and political identities

  • Credits: 3
  • Description: This subject analyzes the relationship between communication, education and construction of political identities. It seeks to understand the processes of configuration of thought and political identities in media contexts (traditional media and new media).

Participatory digital cultures: emerging actors, spaces and relationships
  • Type subject: Optional
  • Credits: 3
  • Description: This subject seeks to reflect on the capacity of participatory and collaborative cultures for the construction of more diverse and inclusive media environments. To do this, we work on the concepts, spaces and theories that define and are part of participatory and collaborative cultures: user-generated content, artificial intelligence, Wikipedia, influencers, etc.

Community and alternative media for diversity
  • Type subject: Optional
  • Credits: 3
  • Description: Through the subject, alternative communication spaces to hegemonic media systems are analyzed, taking into account community media and the third sector as spaces for diversities and dissidence.

Psychology of the media in the face of the challenge of diversity
  • Type subject: Optional
  • Credits: 3
  • Description: This subject seeks to understand contemporary communication phenomena critically from the psychological analysis of the relationship between human beings and the media.

Communication, age and media
  • Type subject: Optional
  • Credits: 3
  • Description: This subject seeks to build more diverse and plural discourses based on the analysis of stereotypes and myths linked to age (ageism, adultcentrism, etc.) and projected by the media.

Cultural diversity, diasporas and globalization
  • Type subject: Optional
  • Credits: 3
  • Description: Through the subject, media environments are analyzed based on reflection on interdependence and cultural homogeneity and the understanding of current academic debates on globalization and diasporas.

Master's Final Project (TFM)
  • Type subject: Compulsory
  • Credits: 15
  • Description: The final master's thesis is the subject that offers students the opportunity to apply the knowledge and learning results acquired throughout the master's degree. This is an individual and original project that must contribute to the development of theory and communication studies through a theoretical and practical perspective that addresses diversities.
