Introduction

The double degree in Law and Criminology provides both basic legal training and training in the social needs of security and the prevention and control of crime based on respect for the established legal framework and social policies intended to prevent and minimize the effects of crime.
The double degree in Law and Criminology provides thorough training in law, as well as multidisciplinary training to analyse social problems from a broad and comprehensive perspective. Graduates are qualified to pursue careers in all fields that deal with crime: prevention and treatment of crime; conflict management and resolution, considering the offence, the offender and the victim; the functioning of the criminal law system as a mechanism of control and social response; and the relationships between various forms of crime and social issues. It combines strictly legal content with content from psychology, sociology, medicine, statistics, methodology, history and social work. Having founded the first institute of criminology in Spain in 1955, the University of Barcelona has extensive experience in these non-legal specialities.

Objectives and competences

Objectives

The main objective of this bachelor's degree is to acquire a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the legal system and criminal behaviour. This requires a solid grounding in the basic principles of law as well as a knowledge of the causes and dynamics of crime. Knowledge of the two disciplines enables students to analyse and better understand crime from different perspectives. This encompasses the ability to link law, regulations and legal principles to criminal theories and penal practice. Students will apply their knowledge to the study and resolution of practical cases, evaluation of public policies on security and justice, and participation in simulated trials.

Competences

Students of the double degree will acquire the competences linked to each of the programmes: the bachelor's degree in Law and the bachelor's degree in Criminology.  Under this combined perspective, the following competences can be defined as specific to the double degree:

Placements

Placements in a company or another type of organization are an integral part of university studies, providing first-hand experience of working methodologies in students' chosen professional fields. They offer invaluable practical experience for the transition into work after graduation.

Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment. They are therefore included in the academic record. There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 500 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.
