Introduction

The double degree pathway in Law and Political and Administrative Sciences provides both basic training in legal studies and multidisciplinary training that combines theoretical knowledge and practical tools from a variety of fields, including political science, law, history, economics, sociology, and administrative science.
The double degree pathway in Law and Political and Administrative Sciences allows students to work towards two bachelor's degrees at the same time. It is organized in two lines, which provide training in fields related to politics – in particular, in activities related to analysis, advising and support for political activity and decision-making – and solid basic training in law. It produces high-level professionals capable of thriving in a variety of political and administrative fields (public administration, government, parliament, international institutions, political organizations, etc.) with extensive knowledge and mastery of legal language and techniques. In the public sector, it meets the academic needs required to sit the various competitive examinations for legal and administrative bodies; in the private sector, it prepares graduates to pursue careers at law firms, legal consultancies, third-sector organizations and NGOs, as well as to provide specialized consulting services.

Objectives and competences

Objectives

One of the main objectives of this double bachelor's degree is to develop a detailed understanding of how law and politics intertwine and interact with society. Therefore, it is necessary to analyse how legal decisions are influenced by political considerations, and how public policies are translated into laws and regulations. The programme aims to develop students' ability to think critically about legal and politic matters.  Students must be capable of questioning, evaluating and formulating fact-based arguments on complex topics related to justice, equality, civil law, governance and other relevant topics. They will also be required to develop strong analytical, research and argumentation skills. Students must be able to critically analyse laws, policies and political processes, and to investigate and present arguments based on relevant evidence and theories.

Competences

Students of the double degree will acquire the competences linked to each of the programmes: the bachelor's degree in Law and the bachelor's degree in Political and Administration Sciences.  This combined approach gives rise to a series of specific competences:
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Legal and political analysis skills.
  • Capacity to produce effective spoken and written communication in the primary languages of use in the two disciplines.
  • Capacity to apply the concepts of law and business in professional practice.

Placements

Placements in a company or another type of organization are an integral part of university studies, providing first-hand experience of working methodologies in students' chosen professional fields. They offer invaluable practical experience for the transition into work after graduation.

Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment. They are therefore included in the academic record.  There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 500 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.
